Wane is bark or missing wood along an edge, which weakens the edge and can cause fit or strength issues in packed assemblies. If the wane is along the edge near the end, trimming it off to expose sound wood restores a clean, straight edge and preserves the usable length and strength of the piece. This salvage approach is preferred over leaving the defect, patching it with filler (which isn’t reliable for structural lumber), or discarding the piece unless the wane is so extensive that trimming wouldn’t meet required dimensions.
